Guntersville is one of the most breathtaking and versatile resort areas in the South and one of the finest sport fishing lakes in America. You can catch fish right off the pier! Travelers from all over the world marvel at the spectacular natural beauty and colorful panorama offered by 950 miles of winding shoreline and 69,000 acres of the fun filled waters of Lake Guntersville. The beautiful lake offers excellent boating, fishing, skiing, and swimming. In addition to the heart pumping water activities, we also offer wonderful golfing opportunities. There are several first class golf courses located nearby: Broken Arrow, Gunter's Landing, Lake Guntersville State Park and Stoney Mountain. One of the famed Robert Trent Jones course is just 30 minutes away.
Numerous fishing tournaments are held on Lake Guntersville each year. Over the years, Guntersville has proudly hosted over 30 BASSMASTER events. In the last few years, Guntersville has received national publicity, as ESPN airs an hour-long program on the Guntersville Tournaments.
Cathedral Caverns State Park is a 10 minute drive north of Guntersville. Cathedral Caverns is home of the world's largest stalagmite, largest cavern entrance, largest stalagmite forest, and largest frozen waterfall. Call before you go to find out times for the tours. You must be part of a tour to enter the cave. You don’t want to get lost like Huckle Berry Finn. As a matter of fact, the movie with the same name was filmed in Cathedral caverns. It is a good rainy day activity!
The Guntersville Public Library, Mountain Valley Council on the Arts, The Whole Backstage and Guntersville Museum and Cultural Center all offer programs and services that appeal to people of all ages and interests. Theater enthusiasts will marvel at the newly renovated Whole Backstage Community Theater. The Whole Backstage has built a reputation for excellence over the last thirty years. The theater is a vital part of the artistic community. The Whole Backstage presents plays throughout the year, offering something for everyone's taste. Over the last few years they have presented Camelot, Steel Magnolias, The Sound of Music, A Christmas Carol, To Kill A Mockingbird and It's A Wonderful Life.
Guntersville is home to 3 sites on the North Alabama Birding Trail. On the Guntersville sites you might see Red-breasted Mergansers, Lesser Scaup, Gadwalls, as well as Common Loons, Hooded Grebes, and Red-necked Grebes. Other species to look for during the year include Double crested Cormorant, Osprey, and the Bald Eagle, all of which nest nearby. We have more coots and sea gulls than you can shake a stick at. Impress your friends and tell them that a coot is not a duck, it is a water bird. Coots are found here in the cool weather months. Some Bald Eagles are here all year long, but they are more numerous in January. It is a great treat to catch a glimpse of our national bird.
The Guntersville Recreation Department offers two outdoor pools, lighted tennis courts, baseball & softball fields, gymnasium, parks, playgrounds, lighted walking trails and a lighted bicycle trail. Guntersville offers numerous city parks totaling 175 acres along the lake. Park facilities include a beach with designated swimming areas, public fishing pier, boat launches, and picnic areas.
The Space and Rocket Center and Space Camp are also just a short drive away in Huntsville. More than 509,000 people visited the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville last year, ranking it number one among Alabama attractions that charge admission. The U.S. Space and Rocket Center, named one of the “7 Wonders of America” by Good Morning America.
